Paremoremo Reputation Changing

Most people throughout New Zealand are familiar with the word Paremoremo.  It is frequently mentioned in the media for the events relating to Auckland Prison, located in Paremoremo.   Perception of the area is rapidly changing as word gets out about the friendly, dynamic and well connected community of Paremoremo.

What many people have not realised is that Paremoremo is so much more than a Prison.  It was first settled in the early 1900s, the early settlers coming in by water.  There were a few Maori living there, but not many at all.  Over the years the region has been settled mostly by European settlers, many who wish to live more of a semi rural lifestyle.  The beautiful bush, the water surrounding the area and the interesting terrain make the place of Paremoremo a real attraction.  ’Pare’ as the locals call it, is a place many speak of as a ‘great place to live’.

Now, through the help of the North Shore City Council and Kate Jackson (Environmental Education Officer), we have had the opportunity to produce a magazine type publication that tells the story of the Paremoremo Community coming together under the vision of

“Caring for ourselves, our families, our neighbours and our environment”

to begin the journey down the road to becoming more of a sustainable community.  The aspect of community has always been apparent in Paremoremo  however over the last three years events and activities along with updated communication systems have united the people.  This has resulted in many successful outcomes and was recognised by the ARC 2010 most sustainable community award being presented to the Paremoremo Community.

News is spreading that this is a friendly and dynamic community with a vision of sustainability with a ‘back to basics’ attitude.  If you would like to discover more about Paremoremo you can click on the following link to download a web version of the recently released magazine.  If you would like a hard copy email b.cooper@barfoot.co.nz
