The people of Paremoremo value the natural beauty of the area including its reserves and coastline. Some were already involved in pest control and native habitat restoration on their own land.
A Sustainable Paremoremo meeting in June 2009 provided the catalyst for action. Inspiring presentations from biosecurity, ecology and conservation experts sparked a sharing of information, motivating locals to work together to improve their natural environment.
Forest and Bird staff signed people up to the Lucas Creek Restoration Project (part of the North West Wild Link concept), and 12 households were issued with Timms traps to get started.
Since then the Paremoremo community has taken action:
Pest Free Pare
120 households are now signed up to control animal pests (rats, possums and mustelids) on their land. The community has consequently noticed an increase in tui, quail, fantail, grey warbler, skink and gecko populations.
Restoring natural habitats on Private land.
Several households signed up to North Shore City Council’s Streamside Assistance programme, an extensive property restoration plan inspiring people to control pests, eliminate pest weeds and plant to attract birds and improve stream health.
Auckland Prison native Plant nursery
The community is now aware native plants may be purchased from the commercial nursery at the local prison.
Reserve restoration
Neighbours have worked together to restore reserve land on Te Araroa Drive.
Increased Possum and rabbit control in local reserves
The local Council caught 104 possums at Sanders Reserve between January and June 2009, because of input from locals. 60 households took Part in a community bird survey 2408 birds were counted including 683 from 18 native species.
70 types of bird were only found in NZ and nowhere else (endemic) and one (kereru) is a threatened species. (Nov 2009)
