In September 2009 a large group of volunteers got together to clean up the Lucas Creek area around Kell Park in the Albany Village. Inspired by local woman Cathy Bourne, her husband Mike and daughter Mikayla a massive clean up took place.
The community clean up day saw residents from around the greater Albany area come together to free the banks of weeds and to have a total clean up. It was well supported by the Albany Community Church and Friends of Lucas Creek.
Throughout the weekend seven skips were filled with weeds! Canoes were used to help clear the rubbish out of the water. A total of 17 trolleys, a television set, road cones, tyres, pipes, iron, computers and lots more rubbish were fished out.
Lucas Creek is an important natural feature and the ongoing care of the creek is of utmost importance to local people. In days gone by there were boats that would make their way right up to the Albany Bridge. Nowadays this is no longer possible due to the sediment build up. Ensuring the Lucas Creek is well looked after for our future generations is paramount.
